Froggy, the frontman of Australian band Waxhead, was still nursing a severe hangover when he paddled out at Portuguese reef break Pedra Branca one morning several years ago. He turned and went on the first wave that came his way, but encumbered by the after-effects of the previous night’s binge, he was sucked unceremoniously over the falls. As his bottom hit the bottom, the reef tore first through his wetsuit and then his balloon knot, causing his sphincter to fall out.

“I managed to paddle back to the shore,” he told Surf Europe, “and then pretty much just lay there dead on the beach.” According to eye-witness reports, it looked like a tongue was hanging out of his bum. Frog passed out from the pain; meanwhile his friend who’d paddled in to help stood there vomiting at the sight of the displaced sphincter staring back at him. An ambulance ride, surgery, ten days in hospital and three months out of the water would follow, but so too would a series of infatuations with the nurses whose job it was to change his diaper. Froggy remembers them fondly as “Portuguese goddesses”, and describes the experience of having them wipe his bum as “great” — “I fully fell in love.”
