Slab Hunting with Nic Von Rupp & Albee Layer in Portugal

Emotional baggage from the Portuguese Hurt Locker.

First Meet

“I actually met Nic at the World Juniors at Narrabean when I was 18 and he smoked me in a heat. Then I ended up staying in the same place as him the next year in Bali and surfed with him every day, and we started hanging out and showing each other some of the waves we had at home. He killed it as a host even though he was extremely busy with like 3 other groups asking him what to do and where to go. He also hooked us up with Alex Botelho who was epic to cruise with as well.” AL

“I’ve known Albee for a long time, I’ve been saying ‘Come over, come over,’ for ages, and this time, they actually did. Anyway, on that day, it was maybe a week or two after I surfed it the first time. The first time Alex Gray ruled it, he had some fricken sick ones. This day, it was the finals day of the Prime in Carcavelos, I got up and checked it at home and saw the swell was solid and wind offshore. Whenever the swell is bigger and wind offshore, I go straight to Ericeira. Pedra Branca was kinda solid and super west, the Hawaiian boys were like ‘Cave!’. There was still some funky bumps in it, so I watched it for ages, but I told them if they wanted to get a clip, it was out there for sure. They were frothing.”
