Slab Hunting with Nic Von Rupp & Albee Layer in Portugal

Emotional baggage from the Portuguese Hurt Locker.

The Cave

“The Cave turned out to be one of my favourite waves in the world. First day we checked it not knowing what it was really and saw one of the best waves I’ve ever seen. Then Nic told us all these scary crazy stories about it and I kinda thought ‘Yeah, yeah it’s probably just another gnarly wave whatever’, but when we got out there I couldn’t even believe it was surfable at first haha. Most slabs have a ledge then deeper water inside of it, but the Cave somehow has another shallower ledge 5 feet past the first one. It’s fucked. But after catching a few I realized if you got the right waves – which was hard as shit – it was so perfect and totally makeable, but it’s just if you fall, you’re fucked” – Albee

“Looking back, you’d have to say so far what’s been really impressive has been the consistency of the swells. Like back to back to back. We’ve had some good Nazare, pumping Coxos, Supertubos, the swell hasn’t stopped really. It’s quite unusual to get them in autumn non-stop, usually swells are more consistent later on in winter, like in the New Year. If the start is anything to go by, it’s going to be an epic season of waves.” – Nic

“When we were there for the big swell we kinda blew it. I wish I had gone to Nazaré and got my stuff together to catch one of those waves. I really wanted to try to paddle it the second day more than anything though, but we didn’t have any vests or boards. It was so annoying afterwards having everyone who doesn’t know that much about surfing ask me “Portugal? Were you there for the HUGE day?” Hahaha. – AL
