Doubtless, Snapper is a fun as shit wave to surf.
Or rather, it would be, if you could’ve snaffled a wave off the pack during Cyclone Marcia’s megaswell a week before the 2015 waiting period opened.
The ‘Superbank’ at the height of its early Naughties powers, was surely one of the very best sandbars anywhere, ever. Zillions of trips to that island continent from around the world were launched by iconic lineup shots of it.
But cast your mind back to a real memorable event at the Quik Pro Goldie. You know, one that really captured your imagination, one that got you all sports fan goosebumpy… well?
Sure, moments of radness kinda come to mind, the 2009 Kirra Joel/Mick & Bede/Slater semis, pretty sick.
Josh Kerr’s heat with Mick in 2007 also offered terrific excitement.
So when we think of best ever moments, why is the first thing we think of is Paul Fisher on the megaphone urging Kelly to ‘Go left!’? Or Freddy P surfing into a rock on purpose, because he was so frustrated by the pitifully small conditions at the time?
It might be first-event-of-the-year-itis. The lack of storylines… except for the perennial ‘is Slater gonna do the tour?’ And that particular narrative stopped being fresh around fifteen years ago.
Maybe The Quik Pro Goldie suffers from being an ever-
present.
Maybe she should play hard to get, like don’t call us back.
Maybe if the tour missed it out for a couple seasons and went back to Allentown, Pennsylvania, or even Narrabeen for a Coke Classic, then its stock would rocket and we’d all be in love with it again.
Probably not though.
