But Thank Jah They Ain't Still Going To...
Mundaka
Mercifully, the powers that be aren’t wholly against culling venues that completely suck.
Recent more nightmare-than-Dream Tour venues include Mundaka, and amazingly, Santa Cruz, CA.
Now Mundaka is a great place, and a world class wave for sure, whatever that means.
But for a WCT? Hideous.
The tide window is good for about 6-8 heats tops, appalling for the rest. Practice at the venue was non-existent. And don’t even start on the back-up spots.
As if Bakio wasn’t bad enough, they then went all the way to Sopelana after that! Sloppylana!
Perhaps the most impressive thing though, was how the pros would publicly gush about how great a place it was and how genuinely honoured and stoked they were to be there, only, as soon as the cameras stopped rolling, to call it a ‘cunt of a joint’ in the very next breath. If that ain’t cold hard professionalism, we don’t know what is.
Steamer Lane, Santa Cruz
Amazingly, an even worse contest venue than Mundaka. Like, bad for most of the same reasons, but without any chance of a world class wave on its day at all, ever.
More like a trundly, wobbly thing that, sure, is fun as shit for kooks like us to surf at, but to stage an event in helping decide a surfing Champion of the World?
The best part of surfing Steamer Lane is jumping off the cliff. No wait, the best part is all the crazy acid burn out fuckers wandering around tweaking. Second best is the cliff jump.
SC resident Neil Young famously sung, “Good to see you , again.” No, it really wouldn’t be.
