Another leisurely stroll along the long and winding road of Nic von Rupp, and this time the scenery’s even better. The first volume of his My Road series was a treat, taking an in-depth look at the cities of Lisbon and Los Angeles; this second volume continues in a similar vein, as the Hawaiian islands of Oahu and Maui get the treatment. The contrast between the two is marked, but the surfing throughout is top-drawer; Nic’s persistence is rewarded with a couple of full-blown Pipe bombs, while John John Florence, Albee Layer and Clay Marzo all make typically impressive cameos. Most interesting of all, perhaps, is listening to Nic and his Euro brethren discuss their efforts to get a foot in the door of the North Shore hen house, and a place in the Pipeline pecking order.
