Torry Meister was surfing out at Pipeline on the 8th December last year, warming up for the approaching Pipe Invitational, when he fell on a take-off and received a severe buffeting — severe even by Pipeline standards. Hurt, he paddled in and hobbled up the beach back to his house, but it wasn’t until he tried to lie down and almost passed out from the pain that he realised something serious was wrong, and called an ambulance. Turned out he’d ruptured the old spleen, an often overlooked piece of equipment situated to the left of the stomach and responsible for filtering the blood. ‘En Route’ documents his journey along the road to recovery, from the beach to the hospital bed to the swimming pool.
