The Wavegarden Cove unveiling clip dropped a few days ago and sent the web into a headspin of virtual froth. The most formidable army in history — that of the millions-strong keyboard warrior — was quick to deliver what it felt must be incisive blows. Was it as good as Kelly’s? Wasn’t it super hard to surf? Where’s the pier thingy gone?

We collated the legible/printable ones, pinged em over to the good folks at Wavegarden, who were good enough to answer thusly:

We never discuss our competitors technology, we just focus on making lots of great waves for surfers of all ages and experience levels.

Did Slater call the office yet and ask to come surf?
Not that I know of. He’s injuried anyway so he needs to rest up before the next event.

1000/hour you say. Realistically, what’s the max one surfer could ride?
Probably 1 per minute i.e. 60 per hour if you’re fit enough.

Where will we likely see the first one open to public?
Many projects are racing to get open… Marrakesh and Melbourne are leading the race – but there’s lot of projects rapidly advancing.

Rough cost to set one up in my backgarden? $10 mil?
I suppose we could put one next to your BBQ, but you may need to knock down the garage? 10 million should probably cover it, but we would need 50% upfront.

It looks like there isn’t a pier thingy like v1 and KSWCo… ?
Yes, the set up is different, it’s a completely new technology. Although the waves don’t come out of thin air.

The takeoff (in the clip) looks kinda… tricky. CT-ers are airdropping into the tube. Can it make tubes and easy-ish takeoffs?

Yes. With the push of a button, we can make all sort of waves with different drops and sections. Even an easy barrel for you.

If the classic Wave Garden (like Surf Snowdonia) is iPhone 1, what’s the Cove? iPhone 5s? 7?
No, just iPhone 2.

Does the level of interest in artificial waves ever surprise you? In terms of clickbait, they’re up there with shark attacks…

No, not really. It concept of creating great man-made waves is a subject has intrigued surfers forever, mostly because it was thought impossible. So it’s only natural they follow the evolution of the technology.
