Tell us about this raft…
It’s a swallow tail quad with Futures Tim Stamp fins. Got a slight single to double concave, medium to high rail volume with more foam under the chest for paddling, so I can get away with a smaller board in bigger waves. I’ll ride this one in up to like solid 6-8 feet surf.
What’s special about a board for Kirra?
You want a board at Kirra that holds in on the steep drop and then can get going quickly that’s why I like my quads on those kind of waves. For me it doesn’t matter whether I’m going frontside or backside the same board will work in the same conditions either way.
What goes good in the tube, or does everything go good in the barrel?
Everything doesn’t go good in the barrel unless you’re someone like Rasta or Slater who can make anything work in any conditions. I prefer quads, but not a fish quad, a barrel quad… there’s a huge difference.
Do you get emotionally attached to em? We’d envisage you probably breaking a fair few…?
You always get your favourite board and those are the ones that usually break first. But my shaper Gunther Rohn is one of the most consistent shapers in the world and gets it right every time, so it’s not so bad when you do break one cause I know the next one will be just as good, if not better.
