The documentary Thundercloud is the story of Cloudbreak, one of the best and historically most controversial waves in the world. It’s a story that culminates fittingly enough in one of the best and most controversial days in the history of pro surfing. On the 8th June 2012, after the contentious decision had been taken to put the Fiji Pro on hold for the day, Mick Fanning was one of the few world tour surfers to join the crew of big-wave specialists in the line-up. Mick paddled out without a safety vest on, using a board borrowed from Kala Alexander — for like most of the surfers there for the contest, he hadn’t brought with him a board big enough for the conditions that day.
