Kelly Slater and John John Florence very nearly took leave of the dormant Gold Coast and hopped on a flight to Fiji midway through the Quik Pro waiting period, planning to coincide their arrival with that of a predicted swell shaping up rather nicely for Cloudbreak. After trading long, hefty left-hand barrels for a day or two they would head back to Coolangatta in time for the start of the Round 2; but in the end the logistics didn’t quite work out, and Slater and Florence were left to ponder what might have been. Alex Gray was under no such constraints. No doubt a longer Turkey Melt clip — like his recent P-Pass offering — is currently on its way, but until then this will do just fine: 50 shades of a very happy Alex Gray, finding shelter from the midday sun inside a Cloudbreak scorcher.
