Kolohe Andino vs Surfboard, Fiji 2012
Physically assaulting one’s surfboard is the go-to method of venting frustration for many a surfer, professional or otherwise, but few have ever attacked foam and fibreglass with the same ferocity — not to mention reckless disregard for the state of one’s knuckles — as Kolohe Andino at the 2012 Fiji Pro. Andino’s anger was roused not by the judges but by the painfully slow conditions and his own painful performance in them; a restart to his Round 2 heat against Tiago Pires had already been called, but things scarcely improved in the 35 minutes that followed. Was there a crease in his board before he started beating the absolute shit out of it? Perhaps, but the way he was sitting stationary on his board beforehand rather than calling for a new one suggests not. It was an impressive display of force either way. As John John Florence noted matter-of-factly afterwards, “that’s not easy to do — you gotta get through the stringer and everything.”
