Gabriel Medina has now met Julian Wilson in three world tour finals; all three have been decided in the final moments, and never by a margin of victory greater than a point. This was the second of the three meetings and on this occasion Julian took the win, the score for his final wave perhaps bolstered by some enthusiastic claiming. Gabriel was in little doubt that he was the rightful victor; he shed a few tears, suggested he had been the victim of a conspiracy, and refused to remain on stage to congratulate the wrongful victor after the trophies had been awarded. Stepdad Charlie shared the future world champion’s sense of injustice, and did some rearranging of the furniture in the VIP tent, which was a nice touch, I feel. Did Julian deserve the winning score? Probably not, no.
