It’s already the middle of summer and the Volcom Surf team has been in full swing lately. Here’s what’s been going down as the team travels around the world for contests, shooting photos, filming and everything in between:
Volcom Stone’s Totally Crustaceous Tour has officially gotten underway for the 2007/2008 season! The first event kicked off with some fun peaky waves in mid July at Goldenwest Street in Huntington Beach. The 2008 VQS Championships will once again be taking place in May at 54th Street in Newport Beach.
This year, the prize purse has been upped to $125,000 in cash, so make sure you surf the regional events if you want to qualify for the championships! As always, every VQS event around the world is completely free to enter, check out the schedule for the VQS nearest you.
From the Crusty Tour to the World Championship Tour… Both Bruce Irons and Dean Morrison have been busy surfing the ‘CT events around the world. They both just got back from South Africa event at J-Bay where Dean finished =3rd. Right now Dean is rated 9th place and Bruce is in 16th with five more events to go. Both guys are in town after surfing the annual 6-star US Open at the Huntington Beach Pier.
Speaking of the US Open, Bruce Irons was inducted to the 10th annual Surfers Hall of Fame on Friday July 27th, in front of Huntington Surf and Sport on Main Street. This was an honor for Bruce as he was one of only a few people inducted each year. Congratulations!
Ozzie Wright has been doing some traveling lately, spending some time in Bali shooting photos and filming for some upcoming movie projects. Ozzie just scored the latest cover of Surfing Magazine, make sure you get down to your local surf shop and pick up the new issue. Ozzie’s band, the Goons of Doom have announced that they’ll be going on tour again this September, keep your ears perked for a Goons show coming to a town near you!
Dustin Cuizon just took home $4,500 and 1825 WQS points from a =3rd place finish at the US Open last weekend, barely getting edged out in the semis by event winner, CJ Hobgood. When there’s summertime surf on the North Shore, that’s where you can find Gavin Beschen, chillin’ at home in Hawaii and scoring some empty surf. Gavin also jumped on a plane and headed over to Japan for the next 6-star with Dustin Cuizon, Alex Gray, Kyle Garson. Good luck boys!
Shawn Barron is heading over to France to catch some fun summer swells and will be putting on an art show at the Volcom Store in Hossegor.
Young Aussie, Mitch Coleborn was over on this side of the globe for a bit this summer. He went on a photo trip with fellow Aussie Tom Rudd and Mike Gleason where they scored some fun Central American surf. Since then, he has been at home surfing the Junior Pro events down under. Mitchy has a great lead in the ratings and is looking to keep that lead throughout the season as he prepares for the World Juniors at the end of the year.
Mike Morrissey has been over in Bali hanging out with Ozzie Wright and Bol. Bol just sent us an email saying the surf has been absolutely pumping the last few weeks, and that the boys have been shooting tons of photos and video. Mike is coming back this way for a quick second before heading off to Europe to lurk around and look for waves in some unfamiliar territory.
We just had a blast up in Big Sur for Nate Tyler’s bachelor party. Nate and a bunch of his close friends spent a few days camping out, shredding some cold waves and having a good time to celebrate the marriage to his lovely gal Jodi this month. Best of luck you two!
Jay Quinn has been spending some time in the States, staying at the Volcom team house in Newport Beach and shooting some photos around town. He headed down to Puerto Escondido for a bit to surf in the Summer X Games and caught some stand up tubes in the process.
Dusty Payne knows where to go in the summertime when the surf in Hawaii is small – he jumped on a plane and spent three weeks surfing in Bali before heading back this way to do the US Open. He’ll be hanging around southern California for a while awaiting his next trip.
For all you East Coasters in the mix, the “Tie Dye Fly By East Coast Trip” is coming to you this summer from August 17th-September 28th! The boys will be on the newest tie-dye RV heading all up and down the East Coast doing autographs signings at shops, VQS events, Bowl Shop Battles, Parties, Bands, BBQ’s and more. There’s gonna be a ton of free goodies at every stops and a ton of fun as well. Make sure you click on over to check out the entire schedule to make sure you don’t miss out.
After winning the Open Juniors division of the NSSA Nationals, Andrew Doheny has been kicking back enjoying the summer south swells at his local spot in Newport.
Since then, Andrew has been surfing a ton with the crew of guys that are in town staying at the Volcom team house in Newport, just down the street from his parents house. Kilian Garland has also been staying in Newport for the summer, getting some waves and shooting photos with Volcom photographer, Tom Carey. Kilian joined Andrew and Tom in Mexico where the crew scored some really fun surf.
Aron Gieger and Blake Jones just got back from a trip to Indo with ESM photo editor, Jimmy Wilson. We hear the crew got some good surf and had a great time, as we can imagine.
Come rock out this year on the 2007 Volcom Tour with Volcom Entertainment bands: Valient Thorr, Riverboat Gamblers, Totimoshi, Birds of Avalon, ASG and Year Long Disaster. The Volcom Tour will be hitting over 40 cities across the nation starting in San Diego, California on July 31st – don’t miss out.
