Day 2 of the Vans US Open of Surfing saw the final 6 heats of Round 1 completed and a heat win from Euro Dream Tour hopeful Marc Lacomare, as well as continued domination from defending champ Jules Wilson, an on-form Michel Bourez and hungry Kelly Slater in their Round 2 heats.

Julian Wilson laid down the highest combined heat score of the contest so far, launching a massive backside air-rotation for a near-perfect 9.83, followed by an additional excellent ride of 8.30 to secure the event’s high heat-total of 18.03.

“That air felt good,” Wilson said. “It was one of the ones that you just go for and you don’t always have the highest percentage on, but I kind of surprised myself. I was in a position in the heat where I could go for it. It was good to land it and it gives me confidence.”

Michel Bourez, on the other hand, opted to stick to the open face but had no trouble dispatching Brazilian Miguel Pupo and Huntington Beach local hero Brett Simpson with his signature full rail power game.

“I’m not an air guy and I just stick to my plan,” Bourez said. “I knew Miguel (Pupo) would go for big airs and you never know with Brett (Simpson). I think he injured himself, but I hope he’s alright.”

The European upset of the day came from Basque Country Aritz Aranburu’s Round 2 exit, unable to do quite enough in the tricky conditions against CT-ers Ace Buchan and Bede Durbidge. Oh, and in other top seed news, Dane lost too.
