HUNTINGTON BEACH RIOTS

A crowd of out-of-town yobbos (none of ’em surfers of course!) smashed it up on Main Street Sunday evening after the end of this year’s Vans US Open of Surfing. It apparently all started when a fight broke out outside a surf shop with some youths accused of stealing. As police then attempted to run down the offenders the situation quickly escalated into full-blown vandalism and looting. While damage was not quite on the same level as the infamous Huntington Beach riots of 1986, the police (or should we say ‘cops’) were eventually forced to use tear gas to quell the disorder, while making a total of 8 arrests, and it’s possible the unrest could have implications for next year’s US Open of Surfing edition.
