The internet is currently awash with rumours — rumours dressed up as factual reportage — that Dane Reynolds is suing his former benefactors, currently languishing in the sinking sands of bankruptcy, for a hefty $3.59 million.

But lies! All lies!

You will remember some months ago that Dane Reynolds parted ways with Quiksilver on more or less amicable terms. We maybe indulged in some light rumour-spreading ourselves at the time, but our rumours were at least rooted, however flimsily, in reality, and moreover couched within a sturdy framework of pop culture references.

Yesterday reputable surf media outlet Swellnet.com published the following:

“Last night it was revealed that Dane Reynolds has made a claim against Quiksilver for $3.59 million. You may remember that Reynolds left Quiksilver in November last year. However, before he did there was some contract wrangling between Reynolds, Wasserman Media, the talent agency that represents him, and Quiksilver.

“Adding to the complexity is that Quiksilver filed for bankruptcy in September last year. Reynolds’ claim against Quiksilver is being heard in a bankruptcy court in Delaware.”

Other surf and mainstream media outlets — even Reuters — followed suit, speculation centring around the fact that Dane’s image was still being used in Quik promotional material a month after leaving the company.

But according to Dane’s manager, Blair Marlin, this is all simply untrue, the result of one big misunderstanding. “There is no dispute between Dane and Quiksilver. A termination agreement was signed several months ago between both parties and the bankruptcy court is just now getting to it. Once the court approves the document, the claim will be dismissed.”

Dane, who hardly strikes us the suing type, isn’t not overly stoked about the furore. “There is definitely no lawsuit,” he told Stab Mag. “Blair called me two days ago and was like, ‘are you in a lawsuit?’ I was like, ‘er, I don’t think so? Am I gonna get served right now or something?’ A reporter had called him about a lawsuit, so he went and figured out exactly what was going on. I still don’t quite understand why people think that there’s a lawsuit. Everyone’s been texting me screenshots of this shit all day.

“It’s embarrassing to me, and a bummer, the idea that I’d be trying to milk Quiksilver for more worth. Trying to milk them for money owed is not something that I would do. We parted on good terms, there’s no bad blood, and I’m definitely not trying to milk them for money.”

So that settles that.
