Joby Photo Competition Winner Revealed!

Marco Gonçalves' backlit Supertubos beast earns him top honours

Have you noticed a sudden increase in the amount of lensmen and women lining up to papp your local shred? The sudden scrum of telephoto lenses all jockeying to catch the evening light refracting off your nose drain, just so? I mean if you live in Hossegor like we do (ahem, #humblebrag) or Peniche, sure, it may have been due to the WSL being in town. But maybe not.

It’s more likely to be on us… and more specifically our radical #JobyPhoto competition!

You see, we hooked up with the good folk at Joby to offer a whopping £500 pounds quid and a bunch of rad Joby photo gear to the best surf shot of them all.

And all you needed to do to win was hashtag #JobyPhoto !

After much consideration, our panel of experts has whittled down the many entrants to a shortlist, and after several minor disagreements, some (totally) unfounded accusations of bias/conspiracy theories, a couple of fistfights, three (refused) resignation letters and unfollow/unfriending all round, picked a winner from them.

We picked Marco Gonçalves’ wicked shot of William Aliotti’s super late drop at macking Supertubos, mainly because it had that delicate yet importance blend of beauty and danger, so much so in fact that it made a tiny bit of pee pee seep out of the panel’s collective kiki.

By Jupiter that’s a late drop! Also note: rad backlit evening vibes, moody north wind blowing up the face, keeping Willy’s heart in his mouth. Plus, super deep commitment in the positioning… big chunks of swell out the back honking down the coast. All in all, this is the kind of surf shot that maybe you’ll stare at a tiny square rendition of on your phone for at least a few seconds, possibly even double tap with your thumb, before quickly moving on to check Rita ora’s lastest, and forgetting all about it.

Well done Marco! Parabens!

Meanwhile, these are some of the losers that didn’t win… but came relatively close!

Happy B Day to me! A day full of Bs. #birthday #barrels #beatdowns #beers #bae #bestfriend #buskook #jobyphoto

@kreepy_kyle’s lineup shot of a wicked looking peak got us a bit excited too. We thought, “God if that place looked like that, it would’ve been really, really good at…” Great job Kyle!

How rad is the soul arch in to this Anglet bowl by Welsh shredder Rob Blythe! Very! If, when confronted with material of this ilk by a friend, the best thing to say if you feel like you might need to bring em down a peg or two is, ‘Epic! Did you get any shots of you actually in the barrel?’ Rob is a legend and actually a real good shredder, he ripped for Cymru into 213th place in the ISA’s in Biarritz this year. He’s actually got a much better pic in his IG feed, taken a few miles south, a few decades earlier. It’s his Ma and Pa at Cote des Basques back in the day. If only he’d hashtagged #jobyphoto on that! Idiot!

Happy Mother’s Day to the kindest and most generous person I know, @anneblythe99 xx

Hmmmm Lofoten, sans snow. Great pic, awesome place. It’s pretty much the Haleiwa of Arctic circle Europe these days. I mean, how many pros/photogs can you name that haven’t been there? A great watershot, in freezing drink, by Emil Nord.

Beautifully moody half and half water shot… “it’s the space between the notes”. This kind of perspective really takes you there, to the shred, I mean. Where you’d be going “What! Again? Fekkin loggers!”

Lo-fi vibes from cliff-top Cornwall… The stokefull trudge. This shot really captures what it means to walk a whole long way for actually pretty average surf. And probably drive a whole long way too, unless you live at Watergate, which pretty much no one does. At least there’s that new Maccas at Cornwall Services off the A30 these days… Coz in my day, it was a lukewarm pasty from one of those little glass pasty incubators atop the petrol station till.

Very nice watershot tube hook up from the Land of the Rising Sun by Pedro Gomes. It takes a load of skill, practise, timing, luck, etc, to nail a watershot tube hook up, well done the pair of you. This shot probably could/should’ve won, actually. Come to think of it. There’s always next year.
