“Aurora Borealis: high energy protons spilling over into our atmosphere… they get through the magnetic shield where it’s weak — at the Poles,” the web-footed Marina explains to the infatuated Danny in Bill Forsyth’s 1983 classic Local Hero. But as the Russian captain Victor tells Mac, “you can’t eat scenery” — and you can’t eat Icelandic barrels either. If none of that makes any sense to you at all then you really ought to watch Local Hero, but first of all you could do worse than watch Episode 6 of EpicTV‘s Atlantic Diversions series, in which the pursuit of beauty and the instinct for survival also pull in opposite directions. Think you’ve had enough of Iceland clips? Surfer Noah Lane and filmmaker Chris McClean think otherwise, and we’re inclined to agree.
