Reuybn Ash’s first episode of his new series Runaway has dropped and it’s pretty sick. All shot in Indo, it features all his signature frontside air A-game and well as the usual Indonesian perfection. We asked to Reubys to talk through the first episode, and not only did he write a blog but also supplied a stack load of killer images and captions. Legend!
“The first episode of Runaway is set in Indonesia. I have been going there since I was kid, so it’s just a natural part of my year in which to the escape the European winter and tune in. Indo is just really good for your body. Great food, high quality waves, you can train hard, the warm climate. I just love the whole effect the country has on me.In this trip we spent around three months in Indonesia, split between Bali and a five-week stint in Lakey Peak and Sumbawa. I was traveling with my mum and dad and my girlfriend, so it was a different kind of trip. It was a real family trip and really relaxed. It wasn’t one of those ones where we were chasing every swell and bombing around madly to crazy out of the way spots. Sure we were always hunting great waves, but we had a mindset just to more enjoy the surf when it comes.
And we had some incredible surfs. Those days of super clean perfect waves with just your mates out, they for me are always the highlight, the days you remember of each trip.
We were surfing good waves and surfing every day, but I made sure I took the time to enjoy and try and film the moments that matter. That hopefully comes across in the Indo episode. Be it the sunsets, or early light in the morning, or the nature, or just personal or funny stuff that came up, I wanted to capture those moments, and the just grab the highlights of all those of for the clip. We experimented with some new camera angles and time lapse and well hopefully some of it works.
My girlfriend, Jonna Kerman, was filming. Early on she was being taught the ropes by my dad Peter who has done most of my filming in my career. In the end the filming for this first episode was probably split 50/50, so it was more of collaboration. For the rest of the Runaway series, Jonna did most of the camerawork. But for the first one aim was to show all the aspects of my surfing, living and traveling in Indonesia and the lifestyle that comes when you do a winter season there.”
