Mind-Bending Perfection At The Rip Curl Mentawai Pro

The world's not-quite-best surfers in the world's best waves

In news which the WSL isn’t quite sure whether to shout from the rooftops or keep shtum about, the Mentawai Rip Curl Pro just took place at the iconic Lance’s Right in waves that could scarcely have been any closer to perfection.

Relatively unknown Australian Chris Zaffis took the win, defeating Balinese legend Dede Suryana in the final by 19.25 points to 18.00. Suryana had surfed a perfect 20-point heat in his semi-final, while Zaffis had come close in his with a score of 19.75.

By far the best waves in competition so far this year, then, have been scored at two lowly QS events, the Volcom Pipe Pro, won by Kelly Slater, being the other one. Slater and Zaffis took home a paltry combined total of 4,000 points for their troubles, which will be of little help in their respective bids for qualification.
