Maya Gabeira goes back to Tahiti to face its giant waves after almost drowning there in 2011.
Two years ago, big wave surfer Maya Gabeira was hit in the head by five waves in the shallowest part of Teahupoo. She was sucked in and thrown out on the reef before they found her unconscious.
The reef, appropriately called “skull breaker,” almost killed the five-time Billabong XXL award winner. The five waves were part of the infamous Code Red swell of 2011.
Earlier this year, Maya went through extensive apnea training and worked on building her technique for Teahupoo. Now she’s back to face the epic swell one more time.
