Maxing Waimea Is A Wonderful, Terrible Thing

We copped a bit a flack yesterday for pointing out that Waimea Bay last Thursday or Wednesday or whenever it was was too big for Kelly Slater but not big enough for the Eddie. ‘Twas a joke, folks! But also it was an observation, and a very acute one at that; the dig, ironic but also true, was directed not at Kelly but at the decision not to run the comp. Obviously it wasn’t “too big” for the 11-time world champ per se, but as he himself acknowledged he was unable to make it out back — as indeed was Ross Williams, as was Mason Ho, as no doubt were many others — which is a fair indication that it’s pretty fucken big. Pretty fucken big enough to run the Eddie, no? Quik, rightly or wrongly, thought otherwise.

Here’s another edit of the day in question, this one put together by Sam Sykes, who incidentally was rendered out of action by Waimea a few weeks ago. It features Luke Shepardson, Chris Owens, Landon Mcnamara, Mason Barnes, Sebastian Correa, Matt Bender and a handful of unidentified chargers who managed to find a gap in the sets — or perhaps just had access to a jet ski.
