EVERYONE LOVES THE POLL

The 2010 Surferpoll went down last night at the Turtle Bay resort. Usually held in Anaheim, California, everyone seemed pretty stoked on having it in Hawaii instead. The biggest cheer of the night went to the Andy tribute. Fittingly, almost everyone dedicated their awards to Andy Irons.

Modern Collective won best film although I’m sure it came out last year, Jordy won best move, Craig Ando breakthrough performance, Jamie O Brien picked up several awards including best tube, Sea of Darkness best documentary and Tina Turner for simply the best. Big up to Mickey Smith who won the short film award for Dark Side of the Lens. The Men’s top 10 went pretty much according to plan except Rob Machado got no5, ahead of the likes of Joel Parkinson, Owen Wright and Julian Wilson. Not sure who’s idea that was, all he’s done is grow his hair longer and get a year older. Freddie P and Sal Masakela were the comperes and they were actually really good. I sat next to Al Hunt who did his own commentary throughout proceedings with stuff like, “That’s not G-Land,” “average, so-so…” and “not with that clip hahahaha!”

I caught up with Charly Martin and Michel Bourez before the ceremony started. I bought Charly a brewski (no free drink tokens for media), but he didn’t get me one back.

Bronze medallion went to big Jordy, silver to Dane and gold Smell you Later. In the birds, Steph (wedding dress) got gold, with Carissa Moore silver and Coco Ho bronze.

The highlight of the entire night was Dane’s acceptance speech. Don’t take my word for it though, I spunked off a bit of low definition video. That’s Liam MacNamara next to me cracking up. He sounds like he’s having the best time he’s ever had, ever…
