Lucky Number Seven

Euro situation room after Hawaii

The Seven Wonders of the New Surfing World

5 was already a record for the number of European surfers qualifying for the prestigious ASP World tour but this week proved that the count up was a bit short lived…
J. Flores, Tim Boal, Tiago Pires and Miky Picon were the early qualifiers (see previous blogs)…Michel Bourez earning his spot with his win at Haleiwa didn’t come too much as surprised considering his current form and the surfing he showed during the Quik Pro France (beyond his result at the QPF the Tahitian made a big lasting impression on the judges, probably the same ones that were judging the two 6 stars in Hawaii…).
So we were sitting with 5 euros for next year’s World Tour when the injury wild card was rightly awarded to Basque warrior Aritz Aranburu who probably forced the decision with his good result at Pipe.
Pipe was also an important venue for Marlon Lipke even if his faith was not in his own hand. His countryman Tiago Pires needed to double qualify ( WQS & WCT) to offer the last WQS qualifying spot to Marlon but unfortunately Pires withdraw from the event due to injury. The devastating news was soon forgotten when Lipke fortunately this time benefited from Andy Irons withdrawal from the 2009 ASP World Tour ( bit of freesurfing ahead for AI) to clinch a very welcome wildcard.
It is never the end until the end, all in all, the count is now 7, bring it on
