Last week, looking at the banks around town getting pounded by a 12 foot swell with strong onshore winds, I felt pretty down… looking at the other side of the Adour (the river separating Les Landes & and the french Basque Country) I was painfully jealous, wishing we could have here some reefs & point breaks as well…until last week end, where glory came in two shapes: France winning the 6 nations tournament in style ( and England losing to a brillant welsh team) and the session that happen here, locally yes! with a true super bank. In the morning at low tide, it didn’t looked that inviting, meduim size swell closing out. But after 1 hour and half of chatting with friends at the top of the dune who were checking the surf as well, we saw this incredible righthander rise from the dead low tide. In a typical Les Landes way, the tide pushing in on a sand bar nearly perpendicular to the dunes created some rights breaking along it with super shallow sections and solid sand filled lips…The rip was intense as you would guess and placement tricky…the wave was a challenge from the steep take off to the shorebreak section some 80 meters down the line…that’s hell of a long ride for Les Landes. There was not the usual pro field or unfriendly idiots, no one did really stand out during that three hours session but for that matter it was an unusal smiling line up for a sunny saturday morning. Everyone got shacked, everyone got the ride of the day and everyone out there will probably tell the story or blog about it…
spirit is high now, a good sand bank is all it takes
