Train a lot, watch video footage of yourself, learn from your mistakes and it helps if you have the support of your family, girlfriend and sponsors so you can always be at the top of your game.

Don’t obsess about the swell conditions, keep your expectations in check and you can’t lose. Just make the most of whatever nature delivers.

Be mentally prepared, focused and confident that everything will go to plan and make sure you have the right equipment… you want a really good quiver.

A good book is essential, plus iPod, laptop and good travel companions to piss around with.

Look after your image, have a positive attitude, score good contest results and know how to sell yourself.
Best way to catch a good wave at Pipe?
That’s a difficult question because Pipe is so busy and you don’t get to choose your waves, but I think the best ones are the ones that come from second reef with not much wall, that way you can drop in easier and score a good barrel without the risk of it closing out… I’ve only caught three in my whole life.

Always try to backdoor the peak, find a good, solid stance depending on the size of the wave and watch what the wall is doing to guide you out at the end of that amazing moment…
