The Best with Pablo Gutierrez

Best way to grow your hair back:
I don’t know, if anybody hears anything, please let me know!

Best thing about Cantabria:
Peace and quiet.

Best time to have a siesta:
From 4 to 5 pm.

Best tapas:
Ezquerra bar in Pedreña, Cantabria.

Best fiesta in Spain:
Kuori bar at Somo.

Best bank at El Brusco:
At the far end of the beach.

Best surf shop in Santander:
In Santander Gables and in Somo Xpeedin.

Best place to eat in Santander: Restaurante La Bombi

Best place to go out:
Bars in the centre of town, zona de Cañadio.

Best surf trip this year:
Mentawais with friends from the tour on that huge swell in May.

Best way to tackle maxing Lance’s Right?
Have a 7’0”, go with a couple of big wave riders and make sure someone’s videoing/taking pics!

Best non-surf destination:
The interior of Cantabria, for example Potes.

Best thing about having your contest jersey ripped off by the lip in the Pipemasters:
That only ever happend to Bruce Irons and me, I think. The best thing was that it didn’t look or feel like I was in a heat and I remember that I actually surfed better.

Best way to improve your surfing:
Train a lot, watch video footage of yourself, learn from your mistakes and it helps if you have the support of your family, girlfriend and sponsors so you can always be at the top of your game.

Best way to score on a surf trip:
Don’t obsess about the swell conditions, keep your expectations in check and you can’t lose. Just make the most of whatever nature delivers.

Best way to get into big wave surfing:
Be mentally prepared, focused and confident that everything will go to plan and make sure you have the right equipment… you want a really good quiver.

Best way to survive long haul flights:
A good book is essential, plus iPod, laptop and good travel companions to piss around with.

Best way to hook up with a sponsor?
Look after your image, have a positive attitude, score good contest results and know how to sell yourself.

Best way to catch a good wave at Pipe?
That’s a difficult question because Pipe is so busy and you don’t get to choose your waves, but I think the best ones are the ones that come from second reef with not much wall, that way you can drop in easier and score a good barrel without the risk of it closing out… I’ve only caught three in my whole life.

Best way to score a good barrel?
Always try to backdoor the peak, find a good, solid stance depending on the size of the wave and watch what the wall is doing to guide you out at the end of that amazing moment…

Best thing about being called El Matador:
They respect you more.

Best thing about going on The Search: Travelling the world scoring perfect surf with friends… Duh!
