“First of all, I’d like to say — and the ASP are going to fine me, ‘cuz I don’t want to be a part of this dumb fucking wannabe tennis tour…” These immortal words — the most famous opening to a post-heat interview in surfing history — were uttered live on the webcast for the Quik Pro New York, a one-off world tour event held in 2011 and won by Owen Wright. Todd Kline’s reaction is priceless. Bobby had in fact won his heat, and exactly why he was so pissed off was not entirely clear, though presumably it had something to do with the new One World Rankings the ASP had introduced that year. He was fined and chucked out the contest for his outburst, and later that year he got his wish; after several successive years finishing in the top ten, Bobby successfully failed to re-qualify, and he’s never surfed on this dumb fucking wannabe tennis tour again.
