It’s been a family affair from the beginning for the young Charly M. Introduced to surfing by his dad, the first surfer in the Caribbean paradise island of Guadeloupe. Then his mother religiously took the tow headed grom to the surf every weekend. Sports were obviously a part of their lifestyle and Charly ended up choosing surfing to feed his competitive nature. His local spot, the famous Moule, that has produced all the top surfers from the island, offered the ideal training ground: family vibe on the green grass and perfect set up in warm water to hold contests on the fun lefthander. From a very young age he wanted to make a living from what he loved the most. So be it, he had full support… but on his way to living the dream, Charly had to overcome the relative seclusion of his native island from the might of the surf industry and the sponsor dollars. “I got lucky to get early support from the Guadeloupe federation and then O’Neill stepped in and gave me the opportunity to go abroad and surf the planet”.

Now having recently got 3rd at the Billabong World Pro Juniors things are starting to heat up. Charly’s looking at gaining as much experience as possible on the European WQS, improving his surfing repertoire and his realism during heats, “I still fall too much” he admits. It won’t surprise anyone, but like every other surfer from his generation, he’s looking at the WCT with envy, “It will be difficult but I want to believe in it,” and before entering the big league Charly’s got a healthy program to reach the top: surf as much as possible and enjoy the best job in the world.
