Top Women Surfers Heading For Mozambique

Roxy is proud to announce their latest innovative surfing event, the Roxy Invitational set in Mozambique. A contest set to have some serious waves and some serious surfing, it features a list of the top ten female surfers in the country and is by invite only. The event has a waiting period of five months and is a six day trip but the event can be finished in one day’s surfing. First prize sits at a cool R10,000. The location is a world class point break in Mozambique that has a reputation for providing some of the longest and cleanest right-hand waves in the world.

The green light for this event will depend entirely on a positive surf forecast, and should there be a cyclone in the area and a chance of good waves, the event will be mobilised from Durban. Much like the Quiksilver Goodwave, this is an event that is guaranteed firing surf, and just this fact sets this event apart from the regular women’s surfing events.

Dane Patterson, Marketing Manager for Roxy South Africa, is upbeat about this new and exciting event. “The Roxy Invitational was introduced this year to showcase the incredible amount of talent that South African women’s surfing has to offer,” said Dane. “This event is very unique and hopes to see the women charging head to head in good solid waves. It’s a trip that offers a selected few an experience of a lifetime.”

As well as the opportunity to surf excellent surf in an unique environment, there will also be the use of jetskies to assist the girls to get back out to the line-up. Sometimes the waves in Mozambique can get so long that it will take too long for the girls to paddle all the way out to the take off zone, and a lift back out on a ski will make it possible for the girls to save energy and surf at their best.

Natasha Hurst, brand manager for Roxy South Africa, is also in high spirits about this unique event. “The Roxy Invitational is a first of its kind in SA for women’s surfing. It is not only a surf contest but an amazing adventure that offers girls the opportunity to surf great waves and gain maximum exposure.“

The list of invitees are going to change every year, and the Roxy Invitational is going to become the most coveted female surfing event in South Africa. One of the invited surfers for the inaugural event is East London’s Nikita Robb. “So stoked to be a part of this event.” said Nikita when she heard she was one of the invited surfers. “It sounds like it’s going to be a sick event and I’ve always wanted to go and surf in Mozambique.”

The ten surfers will be selected from the following list: Rosy Hodge, Stacey Guy, Tammy-Lee Smith, Nikita Robb, Heather Clark, Michelle Hill, Chantel Rautebach, Sarah Maritz, Tasha Mentasti, Tamarys de Maroussem, Sarah Baum, Penny Robarts, Kirsty Delport, Nicolle Annels, Heidi Palmboom, Telana Flanagan, Tarryn Chudleigh, Danielle le Roux and Tammy Robarts.
