Seven times ASP world champion Kelly Slater (Cocoa Beach, Florida, USA) (pictured) clinched his record eighth world title at the Billabong Pro Mundaka today. After his two biggest rivals current world number two Taj Burrow (Aus) and Joel Parkinson (Aus) lost before the finals, Slater’s campaign was over. Burrow fell to Dean Morrison (Aus) in the quarterfinals and Parkinson was unable to withstand Slater’s assault in the semi finals and was eliminated. When Slater won his semi final heat, he also won his eighth world title. Slater is currently facing rookie Bobby Martinez (USA) in the finals but with an eighth world title already secured, the King has achieved the ultimate in his surfing career.
The Billabong Pro is the ninth of 11 stops on the Fosters Men’s ASP World Tour and features the top 45 surfers in the world and 3 wildcards.
