Rusty SA Welcomes Two New Surfers to Team

Rusty South Africa has welcomed top rated surfers Brandon Roberts (Cape Town) and Devyn Mattheys (East London) to their surf team. Roberts and Mattheys have a string of impressive results behind them and have already made waves since being sponsored by Rusty.

“On behalf of Rusty we are thrilled to have top surfers like Brandon (pictured below) and Devyn join the Rusty family. Both surfers blew us away within their first month of joining the Rusty team when Devyn took out the Men’s SA Open Title and Brandon was crowned the Pro Junior Quiksilver King of the Groms. Such noteworthy results from surfers in such a short space of time would make any sponsor proud and this is just the beginning of their success with Rusty backing them,” commented Rusty Sales and Marketing Manager Mike Varikas.

Twenty-three year old Mattheys is no stranger to success having won two SA titles as well as earning his SA colours in 2002 and he was the over all winner of the 1999 Billabong Junior Series in the under 16 division. Mattheys who started surfing when he was ten years old lives in Gonubie outside East London and has traveled extensively to compete in various national and international events.

“I’m really stoked to be surfing for rusty again it seems to bring me luck because the first time I was sponsored I won the 2003 SA Champs and now four years later just after being sponsored by Rusty I won the SA Open title. I am looking forward to a long and positive relationship with Rusty which is an awesome brand with top notch international team riders such as my friend Jamie O’Brien who I stayed with in Hawaii a few years back,” said Mattheys.

Kommetjie surfer Roberts (19) exploded onto the SA surfing scene when he won the O’Neill Cold Water Classic at the tender age of 16 making him the youngest surfer ever to win a Pro Surf Tour event in the country. His local break is Long Beach and 2007 has already been a great year for him as he took first place in the Cape Town Quiksilver King of the Groms event as well as winning the Durban leg of the Billabong Junior Series.

“I am really pleased to have signed with Rusty. They have definitely always been the coolest surf brand in my opinion throughout my surfing career and I think that they are the best surfboard manufacturers in the world,” said Roberts.
