Rip Curl GromSearch

Sydney Surfers dominated the final day of the Rip Curl GromSearch in Jan Juc, Victoria last week.

Talented young Sydney surfers Perth Standlick from Bondi (pictured above) and Laura Enever from Narrabeen, both 15 years of age, won their under-16 divisions of the opening event of this seasons Rip Curl GromSearch in clean 1m surf at Jan Juc Beach. Throughout the event they were standouts and they maintained their form into the final day to take comprehensive wins. Both will now return to Bells Beach next Easter to compete in the national final of the series and if they win that event they get the ultimate opportunity to compete in the international final which runs during the Rip Curl Pro World Championship event at Easter.

For Enever, winning Rip Curl GromSearch events is nothing new. This was her fifth victory over the past two years in the national series and she’s now very focused on her goals for this season: “Now I’ve qualified for the national final I’m looking forward to coming back and hopefully winning that,” she said. “The international final is my ultimate aim, I finished 7th last year and feel I can do much better this year.”

Standlick is also a previous winner on the prestigious national GromSearch series having won in Newcastle last year but believes this year he’s better prepared for the national final: “I’ve enjoyed the waves down here and I’m really looking forward to the national finals at Bells Beach,” he said. “I’ve had a few good surfs at Bells while I’ve been here and I like the wave, especially with a bit of size, so I’m confident I can do well there.”

Standlick was particularly impressive in his quarter final victory when he posted the events highest scoring heat win with an impressive 19.4 out of a possible 20 which included an outstanding 9.9 scoring ride.

The next event on the GromSearch Series is in Newcastle early next month.
