Reef strengthens its Hawaiian arsenal consisting of Evan Valiere, Sean Moody and Stephen Koehne with the signing of Tonino Benson to the roster. This 16 year old, Kailua-Kona local is currently finishing up his amateur career as he gears up to chase the WQS and Pro Junior Series in 2007 representing Reef footwear and apparel.
Benson has already demonstrated his competitive prowess on a global level when he became the 2005 ISA World Junior Champion. Edging out more than 100 surfers from 28 different countries, Benson joins the ranks of Joel Centeio and Kalani Robb as the only Hawaiian amateur surfers to win the title.
Reef’s Global Team Manager, Heath Walker, states: “I am stoked to have Tonino on board because he is a perfect addition to our highly talented team. With guidance from experienced teammates Ben Bourgeois, Leigh Sedley, Rob Machado and Bobby Martinez, Tonino will be in great hands next year traveling and learning from our top athletes.”
Benson is already reaping the benefits of that guidance as he finds himself amongst Reef’s top talents at the team house on the North Shore. Tonino will also be getting plenty of camera time as he works with Reef staff photographer, Scott Aichner.
Walker added: “Tonino already has the talent. At 16 years old, he’s already surfing like a pro and is destined for stardom. We’re stoked to be in a position to help take his career to the next level.”
When asked about his thoughts on signing with Reef, Benson said, “I’ve been with Reef for 4 years on the footwear team but now I am just super stoked to be on this great apparel team with Bobby Martinez and Ben Bourgeois.”
