The Red Bull Big Wave Africa 2007 is set to kick off at Dungeons in Cape Town, South Africa from 1st June – 31st August 2007.
Red Bull are proud to announce their ninth edition of the Red Bull Big Wave Africa surfing event. This event, one of only three big wave paddle-only events in the world and the second longest running event, is set to take place at the big wave spot known as Dungeons, off the Sentinel in Hout Bay, Cape Town.
The contest organisers have opened up the field to allow 24 surfers to compete in the event, giving it a wider field, more scope for local surfers and added international flavour. The invited surfers, who are selected by an independent panel, will be announced shortly. First prize for this event is set at R100,000 out of a total prize pool of R300,000 and there are going to be a number of special awards for things like Biggest Wave and Worst Wipeout.
The waiting period runs from 1 June until 31 August, with a 48-hour call for the event day to allow international surfers to make their way to South Africa. Red Bull utilises top South African wave forecaster Spike to help with swell predictions, and the contest directorship falls under the able hands of Gary Linden and Johnny Paarman. Legendary Mavericks discoverer and pioneer Jeff Clarke also might be in attendance at this event as a guest of Red Bull.
The Red Bull Big Wave Africa website is going to be the central hub from which all information, images, video and downloads can be found, as well as athlete profiles and a history of the event. This year the event is going to be have live streaming, so that people from around the world can watch the event live, as it goes down. The website goes live on 1 June 2007.
With the Cape having already experienced some phenomenal waves this year, things look good for a great event. Dungeons has proved that she can produce some of the biggest waves in the world, and this year is set to undoubtedly be another big year down at the Cape Of Storms.
