Rip Curl Rider One Anwar is Indo’s King of the Groms

14-year-old Rip Curl team rider One Anwar from Lakey Peak in Sumbawa is absolutely tearing up the Indonesian grom scene this year. In a man-on-man final against his older brother Gazali Hamzah at Canngu Beach, Bali, on Sunday 10th June, he ripped his way to victory at the Quiksilver King of the Groms Final, stopping finally to jump onto the podium and receive his ticket to France to compete in the World KOTG Final at Capebreton France in early August.

It will be the young man’s second trip abroad this year, as One flew off to Australia in April to compete in the Rip Curl GromSearch Finals at Bells Beach after winning the Indonesian Rip Curl GromSearch title in 2006. “I’m so stoked to be going to France to surf. I don’t know what else I’m going to do there, but know I want to eat a steak!” said One.

One currently sits at the top of the rankings in the ISC (Indonesian Surfing Championships) Junior series after taking first place at GromSearch events first at Lakey Peak in Sumbawa and then at Medewi Beach in Bali. And several weeks ago he was the sole Indonesian on the podium at the recent Billabong Pro Junior event at Keramas, blazing to an equal 3rd in a field of hot Australian surfers.

In addition to competing in the ISC Junior series, One is also on the Pro tour and is currently ranked number 11, surfing against much older and more experienced surfers like Rizal Tanjung, Pepen Hendrix, Lee Wilson, and Wayan “Betet” Mertha in these six star events.

One learned to surf in the hollow waves of his homebreak Lakey Peak in Sumbawa. He now spends most of his time in Bali with several trips home each year to see his family, as he is focusing on finishing his schooling while pursuing his mission of becoming a top professional surfer.
