What

The final event of the Quiksilver King Of The Groms Series presented by Virgin Mobile In Association With Resolution Health. The series has two divisions, the U20 and the premier U16 Grom division. The winner of the U16 series receives an all expenses paid trip to the grand finals in France and an opportunity to become the international King of The Groms. The King will then be awarded a guaranteed trials slot into two of the world’s biggest WCT’s – the Quiksilver Pro France, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast. That grom will thus receive a rare chance to achieve a major result in a WCT event. The winner of the U20 division receives a return trip to Hawaii. There’s also a prize pool of R22000 per event, with R5000 for first in the U20 division and R3500 for first in the Grom division.

Where

The venue for the final event is set to be at Southern Cape’s famous surf destination Mossel Bay. Either Inner Pool or Outer Pool will be the prime venues, but should any of the other waves turn on then the contest will move to the best venue of the day in the vicinity. Previous events have been held at Long Beach in Cape Town and Southbroom on the Kwazulu Natal South Coast.

Who

The U20 Pro Junior Division has got some big names in it from all over the country. The current leader in this divison is Brandon Roberts from Cape Town, sitting on 1500 points. Right behind him are two of South Africa’s top juniors in Rudy Palmboom from the Bluff and Brandon Jackson from Durban, both sitting on 1460 points. Other surfers who are in the chase in the U20 division are Shawn Dennis and Josh Redman, both from Durban, Klee Strachan from Warner Beach, Casey Grant from Scottburgh and Nick Godfrey from Cape St Francis. Jordy Smith, who has only surfed (and won) one event, is currently in tenth place.

The premier U16 Grom Division is also an extremely tight division. Dale Staples from Cape St Francis has already won the first two events and thus has a strong lead, but it is far from unassailable. Surfers champing at the bit to catch up are last year’s King Of The Groms Matthew Bromley from Cape Town and Nic Godfrey from Cape St Francis. Other surfers still within catch-up distance are Shaun Joubert from Mossel Bay, who will be competing at his home breaks and Dale’s brother Dane.

When

The finale event is set to take place on the weekend of the 23 and 24 June, prime time for winter swells in Mossel Bay. There will also be an awards ceremony after the event at a venue to be announced.
