The Mavericks Big Wave Invitational ran yesterday and although the surf wasn’t quite as big or as consistent as hoped for, plenty of rad heavy water action and carnage went down with Peter Mel eventually taking out the final. San Clemente’s Greg Long was also back in the line-up for the first time following his dramatic near drowning at Cortes Bank three weeks ago and placed a respectable 3rd. Other current big wave man-of-the-moment Shane Dorian unfortunately had to put in a no show due to a shoulder injury he incurred while paddling into the mega beachbreak wedge of Nazaré, Portugal 10 days ago.

If you missed the live webcast and fancy a heat recap of the final, head on over to

1st Peter Mel
2nd Zach Wormhoudt
3rd Greg Long
4th Alex Martins
5th Mark Healey
6th Shawn Dollar
