O’Neill’s Braggers Cup Kicks Off at Casino Pier, Seaside Heights, New Jersey in April 2007.
The time is here once again for the ultimate grudge match between surf shops. The stage is set for epic battles in O’Neill’s 6th Annual Braggers Cup. As always, the victors will be worshipped and the losers will be scorned and humiliated. Prestige, honor, and bragging rights are at stake and the question still remains. Who has the best surf shop in their prospective region?
The events are filled with fun and larceny and no one is exempt from some good old-fashioned heckling from the opposing competition. Despite the raucous banter in the competitors’ area, at the end of the day, good surfing prevails and the best team wins! There will be four regional team champions who will have proved themselves the best and get to celebrate in their plunder and good fortune.
“These events are designed to give back to the local shops and communities that support us all year long. It’s a great competitive format but a lot of fun too,” says Steve Ward Vice President of O’Neill Clothing.
The Braggers Cup implements the concept of the NSL’s The Game format where four man teams compete against each other (Changes per contest director). Teams are made up of surf shop owners, employees, and sponsored riders who surf together in heats for combined wave scores for each team. The total is then matched up with opposing teams of their round to determine advancement.
Instead of the usual format of competitors jockeying and hassling for waves the teammates surf at the same time together and get to cheer each other on to go big and blow tail. Each rider is scored on his top wave and they add the cumulative combined score for the team. In essence, every rider’s single wave is extremely important.
There is also a double whammy wave, which is a key ingredient to success for the team. The designated surfer doubles his top score-where pressure rides considerably for that surfer. The format is not only fun for the competitors but is equally exciting and full of tension for spectators and opposing teams. When someone digs rail on the best wave of the heat the contestants from opposing teams will erupt with first class hazing.
The Braggers Cup has a grand prize for each regional Champions including: $2,000 of cash, tons of product from O’Neill, Transworld, Vans, Gravity Skateboards, Freestyle, Smith Optics, Himaya Sunscreen and Famous Wax.
There will also be a Best Maneuver Award per region and they will win a Timmy Patterson surfboard and 0 from Himaya Sunscreen. Money and prize packages aside, everyone knows the ultimate prize is winning the illustrious Braggers Cup Trophy which gives the champions the license to brag for one year about how hard they rip!
