He hasn’t surfed a single heat since this time last year, when he was knocked out in the opening rounds of the trials for the same event, but this time round Australian man-giant Jay Davies has won himself a place in the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. He beat Jack Robinson in the final of the trials by 0.45.
This is most welcome news. Davies has been gracing our screens a fair bit lately — parking his large frame in spacious P-Pass pits, knocking out Herculean layback hacks during an East Coast Australia road trip — and we can’t wait to see him grab the world tour round the neck and give it a good shake. The contest is due to get underway later on tonight/this morning European time, should conditions oblige, of course, and Jay will be surfing in heat 6 against Mick Fanning and Matt Wilkinson. It looks like he’ll have some suitably large waves to work with too. You can add him to your fantasy surfer team for a meagre $1,500,00, which at the same price as Alejo Muniz or a beachfront house in the south-west of France, and for half as much as Glenn Hall, is an absolute steal, no?
Below is his latest clip, filmed around his home in Western Australia.
