Adriano de Souza seems to have got this whole surfing malarkey pretty well figured out — worrying news indeed for all those surfers on the world tour with designs on this year’s world title. With the kind of steady reliability and tactical acumen that was so patently lacking in the Brazilian football team that crashed out of the World Cup last year, de Souza overcame first Taj Burrow in the semis and then John John Florence in the final to win the 2015 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. He now sits comfortably atop the WSL rankings, with 2nd place Mick Fanning trailing him by almost 8,000 points already, a considerable margin at this early stage of the season. The next event on the schedule is the Billabong Rio Pro, where historically the Brazilian has fared well, floater opportunities being rife. Courtney Conlogue won the women’s event yesterday, putting an end to Carissa Moore’s winning streak and moving her up to 2nd in the rankings.
