Sixteen surfers are left for the Hard Rock Cafe Junior Pro as wave performances were at their highest level yesterday at Sunset Beach, Hawaii. Forty eight surfers started out in the event and were treated to eight to twelve foot faces with perfect off shore winds during the first round. By round two, a light on shore breeze made for challenging conditions and wave knowledge became a factor for the young guns.
Leading the charge was 17-year-old Sunset Beach resident Chaz Chidester as he dominated competitors in his main event heat scoring a combined total 17.67. Displaying a strong backhand attack was Waimanalo resident Kekoa Cazimero as he won out over crowd favorite Mason Ho in a hotly contested heat over Dege O’Conell from California and Japan national champion Shu Hajiwara.
Maui also had it’s share of high performances as Nalu Wallace, Clay Marzo, Albee Layer and Dusty Payne showed up hoping to stake a claim to the Hard Rock Cafe Junior title as the event will be completed today.
