Quiksilver South Africa are proud to announce the Quiksilver Pro Africa 6-star Prime WQS event taking place on African Shores from the 16 to 22 April 2007.
It’s the best time of the year for surf in Durban, and the best surfers in the world are going to be surfing the firing beachbreak barrels of New Pier during prime season. Should New Pier not be optimal, the second venue is the spitting reef tubes of the famous Cave Rock. Either way, world class waves with world class surfers are a definite. By securing the two best surf spots in the area, Quiksilver has raised the stakes for the event to 6-Star Prime Status. With 3000 valuable points for first prize as well as $125,000 in prize money, or close to a Million Rand on the current rate of exchange, its an event that immediately steps up to the plate as the most important event for South African surfers to enter.
The Virgin Mobile trials are set to run on Sunday 15th April, the main event starts on Monday 16th and the event finishes on Sunday 22nd. “We are really excited about this event, it is going to be insane,” said Quiksilver South Africa’s marketing manager, Dane Patterson. “A core international event on our doorstep focusing on quality surfing in the best waves possible. It gives South Africa’s top surfers a great chance to collect some much needed WQS points without having to leave their own waters”.
Quiksilver’s Barry Wolins said: “With it being a six star prime event we are also guaranteed a large number of the top 44 surfers competing in the event. So along with our local surfers getting an opportunity to win those much-needed points they also get a chance to surf against the best surfers in the world. We have chosen the two best surf spots in Durban, and the contest is over a week that is known historically for producing pumping surf. Both spots could produce some serious barrels for the event.”
As South African surfing continues with its boom period for professional surfers, with the most surfers on the WCT in many a year, so Quiksilver have come to the party with the largest qualifying series event on the African continent. This event will no doubt help to continue this trend, getting more of Africa’s top surfers the vital points needed to be able to qualify for the elite World Championship Tour.
The event is also going to feature live webcasting from www.quikproafrica.com
Details on the event wildcards, as well as a list of WCT surfers who will be competing in the event will be announced soon.
