THE Gotcha Surf Challenge

Saturday 25th of April saw the first of the Gotcha Club Challenge at Grande Plage, Biarritz. The competition was organised by Gotcha’s Richard Marsh, the Biarritz Paradise Surf School and the club BASCS which regrouped the best clubs from Hossegor to Zarautz who enjoyed the trans-border opportunity. The surfers turned up in numbers even though the weather was made in Basque country…rainy, which was quickly forgotten about as the surf conditions were super fun with solid waves. The show was on with some of the best surfers in France, Patrick Beven, Fabrice Gelez, Manu Portet and Mario Azurza to name a few. The judges, Yannick Sarran, & Mathieu Portet saw some good surfing.

Patrick Beven said, “It was good to come back to la Grande Plage, with the old faces, catch up with all the friends. I’m in good form, I just came back from some QS events. This competition is good preparation for Scotland, it’s always nice to come back to home base.”

Manu Portet said, “Fun contest even though we copped the rain all day!”

Richard “dog” Marsh, Marketing/team, Gotcha Europe
“It’s important to all of us at Gotcha Europe, and part of our icons never die campaign, to stay connected with our roots, we are looking forward to next year’s event already!”

Hopefully more clubs throughout Europe will take up the challenge!

The concept of the event was enjoyed by all. A different and friendly format, each club was represented by a team of 5 surfers with one young one “under 18” and one older, over 30. The surfers took each other on in a Tag Team situation for an hour.

The final saw the Anglet Surf Club, the Bidarteko Surf Club, the BASC and the Zarautz Surf Club, with the latter winning and taking the 1000 euros prize money.

Frank Lacaze and Richard Marsh of course thanked the sponsors, Gotcha and Redbull, the town of Biarritz, the Biarritz Paradise Surf School and the BASC club organiser Matthieu. But also Beach Brother, surf session, ocean surf report, surfers village and Virgin Radio.

Everyone caught up late into the night between the Marine bar and the Set club to see the footage of a fun day’s surfing and new friends made.

No need to say everyone is looking forward to next year’s event with hopefully a little bit of Sun!
