A great weekend of surf with fine weather has been predicted for the first Roxy Surf Jam presented by Virgin Mobile. With the Argus Cycle Tour happening this weekend as well, the contest has been brought forward and will start on Friday afternoon at Kommetjie, Cape Town, South Africa, and run to completion on Saturday.
The venue for the Surf Jam is going to be a beach in the Kommetjie area that provides the best waves on the day. With the hot weather and wind directions predicted for the weekend the event will most likely be run off at either Long Beach or in the Witsands area.
The U14 division is looking tight, with stars like Courtenay Ellish and Sarah Baum looking like top contenders. In the competitive U16 division Tanika Hofmann is champing at the bit to do well in her home turf but she will come up against the likes of an on-form Kirsty Delport, as well as up-and-coming Morag Steele.
The U18 division is also loaded and top seeds like Tarryn Chudleigh and Caylin De Reuck are going to feel the pressure from the likes of Adele Nortje and Amber Kilfoil. The premier U20 division, always the most exciting division, has some big hitters in it and Danielle le Roux, Tanika Hoffman and Chantelle Rautebach are going to have their work cut out for them to make the final.
This is the first Surf Jam of the year, with the final event on the Roxy calendar being the Roxy Wahine Cup in Durban, the biggest stand-alone girls event in the country. The Roxy Surf Jams are extremely popular amongst the female surfers in South Africa, and are proving to be a great springboard to launch our girls onto the Pro Tour.
