After the third event of the 2007 ASP World Tour, Dragon team rider and focused world champion hopeful Mick Fanning is sitting in first place in the ratings. With a first place finish in the first event of the year, a third in the second, and a second at Teahupoo, Tahiti, the latest event, Mick is setting the pace for everyone else on tour.
In dramatic fashion, Mick and fellow WCTer Damien Hobgood battled it out in the finals of The Billabong Pro Teahupoo down in Tahiti. With the amazing backdrop of sheer volcanic mountains and the vibrant blue South Pacific, Mick and Damien traded off barrel after barrel in what turned out to be one of the best finals of the year.
After a slow start, the sets from a rising swell poured over the reef and with reckless abandon, Mick and Damien dived bombed into five to seven foot sets. Coming down to the wire, Damien secured his victory with deep-throated barrel ride. Needing an 8.21, he secured the win with an 8.60 in the final minute.
With the second place finish, Mick now has the lead with 3108 points. Next inline is fellow Aussie Taj Burrow with 2676 points and Teahupoo event winner, Damien Hobgood from Florida, is in third place with 2342 points. Now the ASP World Tour shifts gears with the Rip Curl Search Pro which is slated to take place somewhere in Chile. You can bet there will be some amazing battles in the cold waters off of South America.
