Charly Martin and Gony Zubizarreta through to the quarters at Saquarema Prime

Changeable weather and swell conditions at Itauna Beach forced athletes to face challenging conditions at the Saquarema Prime, with rain, strong onshore winds and 4-6 foot surf deciding the quarter finalists.

Yet two Europeans, Guadeloupe’s Charly Martin and Spain’s Gony Zubizarreta, were able to capitalise on these conditions to secure themselves a place in the quarters. Unfortunately Portugal’s Nic von Rupp ended going out to NZ’s Ricardo Christie. Charly Martin’s quarter final berth has catapulted him up to second place on the QS ranking.

However, with three Brazilians still in the race, Adriano de Souza, Jadson André and Wiggolly Dantas still remain favourites to win the contest with Adriano presently sitting atop the WQS standings.
