Bursian and Conlogue are Billabong Pro Junior champs

Tommy Bursian (San Juan, PRI) and Courtney Conlogue (Santa Ana, CA) were victorious at the Billabong Sebastian Inlet Pro Junior yesterday, winning the men’s and women’s divisions respectively.

Despite the small surf, spectators and event organizers at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America grade-two Pro Junior event were treating to some of the most dynamic competition of the event.

Bursian, who finished 16th on last season’s ASP North America Pro Junior series, was in stunning form as he ripped apart the choppy 2 to 3 foot north swell. The progressive goofy-footer defeated Travis Beckman (Vero Beach, FL), Chris Waring (Seal Beach, CA) and Blake Jones (Melbourne Beach, FL) in a hard fought final to claim the Billabong Sebastian Inlet Pro Junior which sees him take the ratings lead in the 2007 ASP North America Pro Junior Series.

Conlogue, who narrowly missed out on qualifying for last season’s Billabong ASP World Junior Championships, looked the form surfer of the event from heat one. The 15-year-old natural-footer took down last year’s Billabong Sebastian Inlet Pro Junior champion Sage Erickson (Ventura, CA), Keenan Lineback (FL), Ornella Pellizari (FL) in a highly-competition final.

Conlogue will now be the ASP North America’s first junior women’s qualifier for the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships held in Narrabeen, Australia next January. The remaining women’s qualifying spot will go to the highest placing junior competitor at July’s Target Women’s Pro Junior at Huntington Beach.

The annual Billabong ASP World Junior Championships has crowned past champions such as Joel Parkinson (AUS), Andy Irons (HAW), Adriano de Souza (BRA) and reigning ASP World Junior Champ Jordy Smith (ZAF), and is clearly respected as the benchmark of surfing’s next generation.

The next event on the ASP North America Pro Junior series is the Ezekiel Pro Junior held in conjunction with the Vans Pier Classic at Huntington Beach, California from March 21-25, 2007.
