Yet another year (that’s 9 already) surf invades the streets of San Sebastian!

That’s it, we’re back with the best and latest in international and local surf, film, art, music, a perfect celebration of our surf culture.

We’re super happy to announce another magic space to house us in  this edition , San Telmo Museum as a new space for our Festival. Not only that, but we also confirm our Kursaal terrace open-air (Surf) Culture Flea Market + film + music on Saturday June 4th.

Friday, June 3rd / San Telmo Museum

Japón@Surfilm, presented by Surfing Euskadi

To celebrate our temporary exhibition, 6 Billion Others, organised hand-in-hand with the San Telmo Museum, and presented by Surfing Euskadi, we bring the first activity in our Japón@Surfilm cycle.

The San Telmo Museum is the perfect venue for this first activity in a cycle on the Japanese surf culture, put together in collaboration with Japanese artists, photographers, surfers and media. The ideal accompaniment to the temporary exhibition running at San Telmo in a project bringing us a look at other cultures.

The 9th edition of our festival zooms in on Japan and its surf culture. Surfers on the country’s devastated coasts and locals who regularly ride the waves at Fukushima will give us a first-hand idea of the disaster and its true reach.

We want you to discover the vibrant surf culture in that unfamiliar country. We’ll give you a brief look at the world of Japanese surfers through 3 activities: film and art at the San Telmo Museum, photography at the NOCOLOR Gallery, and back to movies at the Principal Theatre.

There will also be a concert by the local musician, Dotore, and an experimental screening at the auditorium.

• Auditorium: continuous screening throughout the afternoon of Johnny Abegg’s 2 Weeks, a mixture of Into the Wild, The Drifter and the shorts by Kepa Acero. A surfer sick of his sedentary life in the corporate, big-city world uproots and heads for deepest Tasmania. THERE’S NO SURF!

This screening will be followed by Surfboard (6 min) and Anacapa (52 min), by Christopher James. The former looks at reshaping an old board in a Los Angeles gallery. The latter is a surrealist morsel tracing the odyssey of its hero for an endless 52 minutes while he plays at being a kind of Andy Goldsworthy, but with resin and surfboards.

• At the Museum

19.00 Japón@Surfilm: Yatai Trip, by Takashi Kuribayashi. The visit by this young Japanese artist stems from the collaboration between the Basque Country and Japan promoted by Kurando Shoji, a Japanese musician living in Euskadi. Kuribayashi brings us a performance previously staged in a whole bunch of other places before landing here.

21.00: Concert: Dotore

The band with San Sebastian’s Pablo Martínez at its forefront will treat us to a small-format concert prior to the screenings.

22.00: Cine Japón@Surfilm: A Scene at the Sea (Takeshi Kitano, 1991): A title already screened at Surfilm Festibal in 2005, the perfect movie to headline our proposal at the museum. A young hearing-impaired boy comes across an old surfboard on his garbage collection route. His girlfriend, who shares his condition, helps him to fulfil his dream: to become a champion surfer. A masterpiece from the famous Japanese actor/director.

17.00 The (surf) CULTURE Flea MARKET hits the Kursaal terraces!! We love independent creators! Our space will open to all and sundry at 5 in the afternoon. Bring your weird boards, bizarro shapes, special gems, books, photos, sell, swap and discuss the tricks of the game. The whole Kursaal terrace, just for us, so that you can show off your stuff. Are you a surf photographer? Well, frame, photocopy, print out your best snapshots and get them up there for everyone to see. Artist? The same applies… Experimental shaper? Bring along your treasures and contraptions!

And another exclusive! We’re organising the first stop of the WCTS (Mundial del Cantábrico de Tarp Surf). Our friend Cyrus Sutton and Korturoy.tv will treat us to a look at this “tarp pit” modality. The first instalment in this MCTS is on: bring your skate, your camera, and get on into those great barrels at the Kursaal!

19.00 Revolutionary Brothers and Kurando will pump out the soundtrack for our afternoon of laughs, objects and meetings. Boogie on down!

22.00 Cine Descapotable

We’ve organised a programme packed with oddball experimental, independent proposals. Among them is the noteworthy Rodando, a short by Gabi Pérez (Malone), well-known surfer and local artist, who brings us an experiment with a Go Pro camera. Plus a load of other shorts we’ll announce as we go.

The highlight comes in the shape of Korduroy.tv’s second session at the festival (it brought the 8th edition to a close). Cyrus Sutton has concocted a special proposal treating us to the world premiere of the third episode in his series Mex´cellent Adventures. We’ll also see Stoked & Broke (2010), fresh off the press, where we’ll find all sorts of true-grit Californians and, of course, surf from another planet on unidentified floating objects…  Stoked & Broke

We’re honoured to announce that David Carson created the image for this edition of the Festival. He joined forces with the festival team to come up with 3 incredible results. With this communication, we present the special image made for the Gazetekutxa Gaua, to take place on Saturday June 4th on the Kursaal Terraces. More info to come as we go… We’ll tell you how the project unfolded, I think we had a hoot, what do you think Mr. Carson?
