The Flintstone House, Malibu
The Flintstone House, Malibu
Where?
Malibu Hill, overlooking the Pacific Ocean and one of the world’s most famous waves — Malibu, an old-school classic, in fact just the kind of wave you could imagine Fred and Barney Flintstone surfing.
Whose?
TV personality Dick Clarke, who presented American Bandstand from the ’50s through to the ’80s, was the original owner, but it was recently sold by his widow for $1.8 million, half initial the asking price.
What?
23 acres crowned by a house loosely modelled on Fred and Wilma Flinstone’s cave — with one or two mod cons. The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy originally told Clarke he wasn’t allowed to build on the land; architect Phillip Jon Brown said he “came up with the idea that if the house looked like a rock formation, the park conservancy would let us build on top.” And they did.
The result was a single storey house with a wood and steel interior covered in concrete to provide a vaguely cave-like aspect, and an exterior made from “heavy stucco with lots of rocks thrown into the mix.” One would hope there’s a record player with a bird functioning as tonearm, cartridge and stylus, as well as somewhere to park your footmobile.
